Your First Blog Post: A Step-by-Step Guide to Getting Started
Hello, aspiring bloggers! I’m Stella Lawrence from SimplyStellaHandmade, and today, I’m going to guide you through your very first blog post.
First and foremost, find a peaceful spot where you can think and focus. A quiet home office, your bedroom, or a comfy couch could all work—just make sure distractions like TV, family members, or loud noises are minimized. Get comfortable, put on some background music if that helps you concentrate (totally optional!), and get ready to create!
To get started, you’ll need a device that you can use to write a blog post. I recommend using a computer, since you can more quickly and efficiently write your post. If you’d like to use a computer but don’t own one, no worries! You can buy a computer for an affordable price at places like Best Buy and Walmart. Although you might not have the newest, fanciest computer, it’ll still do the job!
Once you have your device, open a blank document on either Google Docs or Microsoft Word, depending on which one you prefer. (In my case, I prefer Google Docs.) Once you have your blank canvas, you can start freely brainstorming ideas on what you want to write about. Are you blogging to tell people about your personal life, your business or job, or something else? Once you’ve settled on an idea, start structuring your post.
To start structuring your blog, think of the subtopics of your bigger topic. For example, if you are doing a blog post about redecorating your bedroom (like Level Up Your Room: Your Totally Doable Makeover Guide), you’ll want to talk about all of the steps involved in doing this. Or, if you’re telling your audience about your business journey (like Potholders to Powerhouse: The Backstory of Simply Stella Handmade), you’ll want to tell them about how your business started, who was involved, etc. Once you know subtopics, you’ll want to add headings, as well as what you plan to say in each section of your blog.
Once you have some structuring done, you are finally ready to write! You may not be an expert writer, and that’s OK! Even if you’re not the best author, it doesn’t matter. Write your heart out!
Once you’ve done your blogging, it’s time to edit! The easiest way to do this (in my opinion) is to print your draft, grab a colorful pen, and start marking spelling errors, grammatical issues, and areas you could improve. After you’ve done that, send your edited post to someone you know, preferably someone who is a strong writer, and have them do some editing themselves. Finally, check over your post and add in all of the changes you and your “editor” made.
Now, it’s time to actually post your very first blog post! You can do this for free on blogger.com by signing in with your Google account. Make sure your account is eligible, though! You must be 18 or older to have an account, so if you’re younger than 18, ask your parent or guardian to make an account for you on their device. Once you’ve opened a new blog post, copy and paste your blog post that you wrote on Google Docs or Microsoft Word into the blank post, preview it, publish it, and voilà! You’ve got your very own blog post!
The very last step is for you to advertise your blog post! You can do this by making an eye-catching social media post on canva.com, a design tool that lets you create professional looking content in minutes. When you have your post ready, post your ad on your social media platforms.
Thank you for reading Your First Blog Post: A Step-by-Step Guide to Getting Started. I hope you learned some basic facts today and use them in your blogging future!
