Level Up Your Room: Your Totally Doable Makeover Guide

Has your bedroom been the same since you were little? Is it time for an epic bedroom makeover? In this guide, I’m going to give you tips and tricks I’ve used myself to help you make your room more “you”.

First of all, you need to know that redoing your room doesn’t have to be completely redoing it. You can keep almost all of your old furniture, and most of the time, you don’t even have to do the hard, expensive, time-consuming stuff, such as repainting your walls.

Here are a few examples of awesome looking tween and teen bedrooms!

Step One: Make a Plan

Before you get to buying new stuff and all that jazz, make a plan! First off, you’ll have to talk to your parents, so make a plan of when to talk to them (see step two below). Once you have that all planned out, make a drawing or diagram of what you want your bedroom to look like. List new things you want, such as decor, shelving, bedding, etc. and write the prices of those items. Once you have done that, your plan is complete!

Step Two: Talk to the People in Charge

Whenever you want to start a big project like this, always talk to the people in charge (AKA your parents or guardians) first! If you are feeling nervous about it, here are some solutions:

  1. Find a good time to talk to your parents, and start with a conversation starter such as: “Did you ever want to redo your room when you were little?” When you want to talk, make sure it’s a time when they’re not busy doing something, such as making dinner or rushing to get a sibling somewhere. Make sure they aren’t distracted by anything and have your full attention.

  2. Write them a letter and put it somewhere where they’ll find it easily. You can hand-write it or type it up.

  3. If you aren’t nervous and are ready to dive in, go for it!

Step Three: Get Rid of Old Stuff

I don’t think this step could be more self-explanatory: get rid of old stuff! Gather old toys, books, decorations—anything you don’t like anymore. For me, that includes anything pink and anything unicorn-related. Things I got rid of were:

  • Pink lamp

  • Pink rug

  • Fake pink flowers

  • Old picture frame

  • Old trash can

  • Old posters

  • Unicorn-themed decor

  • Old stuffed animals

Once you’ve finished cleaning out your old junk, don’t throw it out! Give it away! You can donate all sorts of old things to places like Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity, The Salvation Army, and local thrift stores. You can also have a yard sale, where you can sell your old things. If you don’t have the time for a yard sale, consider setting up an account on eBay and selling your things there. If you have extended family, ask them if they want any of your old things, too!

Step Four: Organize and Declutter

I hate to admit, but in my opinion, this is the most boring part of the process. Get some big garbage bags and go through your drawers, getting rid of junk and trash. Once you’ve decluttered, take some time to organize your space. All of this is time consuming (it usually takes up a whole weekend) but it’s worth it in the end, trust me!

Step Five: Shopping

This is my absolute favorite part: shopping! I love picking out new stuff for my room—it’s just so. Much. Fun! The only problem is, stuff costs money. Like, lots of money. So, you have to shop on a budget. First, make a budget. Consider how much you and your family are willing to spend on things. My favorite place to get new things for my room is Target. You can shop in-store or online, and they always have things that aren’t too pricey. Also consider what theme you want for your room. Common themes include vintage, boho, minimalist, modern, and rustic. Think about what colors you are using and what complements what.

Step Six: Redecorate

Now, it’s time to redecorate! Have fun messing with the layout and playing with different styles. Remember: this is your room. This is going to be the place where you sleep, hang out with friends, take breaks, and relax, so make it uniquely you!

I hope that these steps helped you in the tedious process of redoing your room!
